SSG Forest Wells - Delta Co 1st Platoon 68/69
June 5, 2007
notice received this week from Forest's wife to Jim MacMaster
Date: Wed, 29 Oct 2008
Jim, I apologize for not contacting you before now.
Forest passed away on June 5, 2007, while on a scuba diving trip to Belize. He retired at age 57, after 30 years with National Southwire Aluminum. One of the things he had always wanted to do was to be a certified scuba diver. He received all certifications up thru Assistant Instructor, and was a member of the Dive Staff of Blue Meridian Dive Shop here in Owensboro. Each year, the group planned a week-long trip to a different location, as well as some long weekend dive trips. Forest left on June 2 (Saturday) and passed away on Tuesday, June 5. He had not dived for the first 3 days of the trip because he had become overheated on the small planes from Houston to Belize City and San Pedro, Belize. He said he felt like diving on the afternoon of June 5. He completed his dive, was above water and waiting to board the boat back to the resort when fellow divers thought something was not quite okay with him. He received immediate emergency treatment, but according to his dive instructor, appeared to die instantly. The autopsy report said that he had "acute cerebral edema" and "accute lung failure." According to the physician performing the autopsy, he said this had been going on for a very long time, that the fluid in his lungs was from the brain and was not from sea water. He had been in the hospital several times from 2005 thru early 2007. The doctor said the reason he had become overheated during the flights was due to the fluid on his brain, and diving had nothing to do with his death. We had found out in 2005 that at some time, he had had a mild stroke. (Apparently, the fluid on the brain had not been discovered here in Owensboro.) He was also a very active participant in the Discovery Expedition of Lewis & Clark, spending several months with the group. We would have been married 42 years on August 28, 2007. Of course, this was a horrible shock. But I know his choice would have been to go doing something he loved and not going thru a long process of suffering. He was 64.
Ricky S. McCormick - Charlie Co 3rd Platoon - '70
March 7, 2008
received notice from Ronnie Ponder, of the passing of Ricky S. McCormick
It was getting close to Christmas and Rick had told me he had not spent Christmas with his family in over 10 years. I talked him into calling his sister and coming to NC. He went to his sisters around the 18 of Dec and called me and drove up and spent the night with us. What a great time I don't think we moved from the kitchen table for about 12 hours. Ricky returned to his sister's the next day. He called me when he returned to Buford after Christmas and told me that he had a great time.
I started planning a get together for the guys form my old platoon in Ohio for April. Rick would call every day or two to check on the process. I finally e-mailed everyone with computers and mailed invitations to everyone else.
On the 9th of March Diana and I had not heard form Ricky in about 4 days and this was very unusal. I made ten calls that day. In the afternoon I told Diana that he said he liked to go to the American Legion. I called Information, got the number and called. The lady said he had not been there in 6 or7 days. We got the local Sheriff's department number and called and asked for help. They assured us they would check on him. In about two hour a Deputy Sheriff called, he said mister Ponder I hate to deliver bad news but your friend Mr. McCormick, we found him deceased on his couch. I gave the phone to Diana and she talked for me. They said he had died from natural causes and that he was taking some very strong heart medications.
I have talked to Ricky sister a couple of times and told her what to do( if she wanted to) to make sure our brother and her brother had a proper burial. They placed him the National Memorial Cementry in Salisbury NC. Mary if you would change my friends status on the site. The date of his death was March 7,2008 which was his brithday, he was 59 years old. HE WILL ALWAYS BE MISS AND FOR SURE LOVED!!!!!!!!!

Dear Brothers and Sisters-
Domi was the first platoon leader of Delta Company before me and then after leaving the field was the Battalion Motor Officer. All of us who were picked up by trucks were benefiting from his good direction. He was a man of humor and quiet dignity. Through the 6/31 list I came into contact with him last year and we had lunch in San Diego. We had a good reunion and planned to attend the 6/31 reunion this year.
He had suffered a massive heart attack about 11 years ago and had suffered from heart disease since then. Recently he was on kidney dialysis and his health had deteriorated. He is survived by his loving wife, Magrit and his daughter. His grandson Alex, aged 5, was his daily joy.
The viewing will be at the El Cajon mortuary from 4- 7 PM on the 23rd and the full military burial ceremony will be at Fort Rosecrans (San Diego) at 8:30 am on the 24th. My wife, Rev Bonnie Tarwater will be officiating at the ceremony. If any of you want to attend and need more information please contact me.
In Peace,
Walt Rutherford
